"It is one
of life’s truisms
that the ability to do a thing extraordinarily well does
not in any way guarantee the ability to teach that thing
to others. Fortunately for my golf game, I have been lucky
enough to run across a man who is not only an exceptional
player but an exceptional teacher. That person is Richard
Brown III.
Without a doubt golf is one of the most
difficult sports to master. When I first took up the game
I was not prepared for how hard it was to learn the fundamentals
or how much skill is needed to play the game well. Within
a short while, I realized that professional instruction was
critical to improving my game. So during my first two years
of play, I took lessons with any number of PGA professionals.
Despite these lessons, the game remained
a constant source of frustration for me and the biggest piece
of that frustration was reserved for my swing. The golf swing
is complex and much advice (some of it seemingly contradictory)
has been written and dispensed on how to swing a club. The
lessons I took helped correct some of the more obvious errors
in my swing, but the truth was that whenever I stepped up
to hit a golf ball I was guessing at what I needed to do
in order to swing the club properly. The results were predictable
even if the flight of my ball was not. After a while golf
started to become one of my least favorite ways to relax.
Then
I met Richard Brown. During my first lesson, I was immediately
impressed by two things. The first was his depth of technical
knowledge regarding golf and specifically the golf swing.
The second was his ability to organize and communicate that
knowledge in a way that did not overwhelm me as a student.
Things began to improve immediately. Richard
broke down the golf swing in a way that cut through the technical “clutter” and
allowed me to focus on the fundamentals. Together we worked
on each element until I had a basic understanding of the
many pieces that make up the entire swing. His patience and
ability to present the same information in a wide variety
of ways allowed me to grasp things on the second and third
try that I missed on the first pass. In addition his vast
understanding of the sport as a whole has given me an appreciation
of golf that goes way beyond the ability to “rip” a
ball down the fairway. I have only begun to tap his reserve
of knowledge but I know that over time working with Richard
will improve every aspect of my game.
Finally, Richard is
one of those rare individuals who teach not because they
have to, but because they love to. I firmly believe that
the only thing Richard enjoys more than playing golf is teaching
golf to others. Throughout my association with him he has
encouraged me to come to him whenever I am having a problem
with my game and I have taken him up on his offer any number
of times.
Originally I had intended to take five
lessons with Richard thinking that would be enough. Well
it’s been
two full seasons of lessons so far and I have no intention
of quitting anytime soon. I now take a lesson every few weeks
and consider Richard a mentor and a coach. And my frustration
with golf has been replaced with enjoyment and appreciation
for the game.
Richard Brown is not only a great golfer
but a great teacher and that is a truly rare combination.
To anyone who truly wishes to learn the sport of golf I recommend
him without reservation. Take a lesson. You’ll be happy
you did."
